Hi welcome to my blog. If you like it, why not follow me?

Monday 31 January 2011

Don’t you just love the end of Mondays. I am now sitting on the last remaining spare inch of the sofa. My girlfriend and the hound are both lying down and taking up all the sofa with the exception of this tiny little piece which I am just about capable of getting ½ a buttock on. not to worry at least they are comfortable……ooopps. Just had to move, almost dropped the laptop. Ye gods the hound has just woke up. That will probably mean she will want more room and I will be relegated to the dog basket.

Anyway, today I was working at a farm in the middle of nowhere. There is only a few sockets and lights, but getting the supply cable to the new shed is awkward and will take a while to sort out. I was home around 6ish, muddy, cold, wet and very hungry. Once again I forgot to take any sandwiches and it was to far to travel to the nearest shop. (note to self…remember and look in fridge and remove sandwiches in mornings)

After thawing out, showering and eating a culinary delight its down to paperwork, so I have just sorted out an estimate for a nice house rewire and almost completed an invoice, but I cant complete it because I have left my material logs in the van and its to cold to nip out and get it.

Anyway busy day ahead tomorrow, got to wire and fit a couple of fans and sort out a shower.

Sunday

Sunday. Spent most of the day napping and recovering from the hangover from hell. Still have it now and cant wait until tomorrow and the hangover is a distant memory.

My only real activity today is when I went to survey a job this afternoon and managed to sort out a couple of invoices.

I now have my feet up watching cowboy builders on TV. I cant believe what some people get up to.

Saturday

Saturday are satisfying. I love em. I have a dilemma……Guinness, black sheep, spitfire or lager? Decisions, decisions….owe what to do. This is the most difficult decision I have made today. Owe hell, will start on will have a go on them all.

Anyway, been to Skelmersdale, earlier appliance testing and teaching a factory owner how to do it. With the exception of talking nonsense to the factory owner for a couple of hours I have done nothing else. Nice relaxing day.

Well I have a decision to make, need to go and make it.

Fab Friday.

Fridays are Fab, they have a great feel to them. Don’t know why Iove them so much because I work almost every weekend, so to me its just like every other day. But I do enjoy getting home early, putting my feet up with a vodka and coke and messing about on the net. Anyway tonight its just me, a bottle of Smirnoff, the hound and a lamb madrass. How wonderful is that! The icing on the cake is that my girlfriend is going out so I am in charge of the remote. Fantasssstic. How excited am I. The bad news is that I have a certificate to sort out so I wont get a chance to start on Mr Smirnoff or find out how the remote works  until 8ish. Also its twitter quiz night tonight, so I want to play at that.

Anyway, today I was finishing off a house that I rewired, managed to sort it out, test it then power it up. Another fine job.

Owe aye, meant to tell you, this morning started off badly, first of all I slept late, then was jumping about trying to get my trousers on while walking down the stairs…..well when I say walking, it was like falling. It was not even controlled falling, it was a proper fall from top to bottom. I lay at the bottom of the stairs thinking that I must have broken something, and I was right….a bin.

Anyway, my curry will be here shortly, and need a refill.

Thursday

Yet another good day. I have been working with the amazingly talented and all round good gut (sorry andy that should say guy, nothing to do with your gurth) Andy Slattery. As he will be reading this I thought I would say something about him.

We have been working in a kitchen in the back of beyond. It looks really good, but the wholesaler sent me the wrong under unit lights, so I now have to travel back to fit them next week. I am not happy, not happy at all at the wholesaler, I had a “chat” with them earlier and negotiated some additional discount. Still a pain thou, could really do without travelling ½ way round the known world to fit half a dozen lights…..not that I am complaining mind you, the elderly couple are really nice and make  plenty of brews. What makes it even better, is that they will pay me when I return.

Got home around 8 o’clock, there was a culinary delight waiting for me along with a vodka,(ran out of coke tho, that’s a bad thing….vodka neat is just not the same.

Going to watch some TV now and put my feet up.

Wednesday 26 January 2011

Boring wednesday.

Wednesday, back in Accrington today, the rewire is slowly coming together, the second fix is almost complete, cant wait to finish this rewire its been really awkward, and seem to have been there forever. Going somewhere else tomorrow, then assuming the kitchen fitter finishes the kitchen, the plasterer finishes the plastering, the tiler finishes the tiling and plumber finishes…what ever he does, I should finish on Friday…..fat chance. But it will be really nice when completed. Its not just been a rewire, we have renivated the house form top to bottom, it will be amazing when its finished. House renovations are something the team and I are keen to get involved in, we are meeting for a curry and a pint tomorrow and discuss how we take our plans forward. We have a cunning plan, and are going to market ourselves in a particular sector.

My night job involved second fixing a kitchen, but I just arrived when I got a call from my girlfriend telling me that I need to get home early because she had made a birthday tea. It is my birthday and I had forgotten all about it. Just had it, and as usual where her cooking is concerned is was fab.

Here is the picture of Dave & Mandy that i forgot to add to my blog earlier.

Tuesday.

£1100 to rewire a house….madness. I met with a builder earlier who is building 5 luxury houses, to an extremely high standard. After a lengthy discussion about his requirements (there is a lot of chrome / satin steel accessories) he told me that he had a price from another electrician of £1100. After he picked me up, dusted me down then gave me a shot of brandy from his trusty St Bernard hound, I told him I would have a look at the price tell him tomorrow. Well I have just worked out a price of £1225.00…. that’s without a penny mark up on the materials. I can only think that someone has made a mistake in pricing or using some dodgy materials and working for 6 shilling a day. Anyway, not to worry, his job is not for me. I know what my worth is and its not £1100 for this job.

After the survey, I went back to Accrington, to start a second fix of another house I have rewired. But to be honest I didn’t get a lot done, mainly because I didn’t arrive mid morning, then spent a couple of hours talking to Mandy about a joint business venture we are thinking embarking on.

Talking about Mandy, here she. For once she is not dancing around with a plastering trowel in her hand singing “I will survive”. The other picture is of  Dave, he is Mandy’s brother and does all the ground works, tiling and helping Mandy.

Monday.

Monday, Monday, it’s been a bad day. I had my van serviced & MOT’d. Ye gods. Once I was presented with the bill I had to be revived with smelling salts and brandy. I them sat there for 20 minutes crying like a little girl while the mechanics pointed and laughed.

Never mind my work went well again. I am working at ladies about 45 seconds drive. Which is great because I can leave home at 8am, and be on the job at 8am…...how good is that. It makes a change because I am often stuck in on the M6 listening to a traffic report which says everything on the roads is good and there are no delays.

Anyway, today I was first fixing a kitchen, on some occasions these jobs can be really awkward, but not this one, thats because Julie (the home owner) has stripped most of the kitchen away, so it was basically a blank canvas for me to start working on today.

As I have only recently found out how to attach pictures to this, I thought I would attach a few. Nothing will be safe now!

Here is Dave, he does something with water, pipes, boilers and stuff, I think he is called a plumber, they are a strange breed if being! But Dave is a good self employed plumber, and owner of DEK Services.

Here we have Julies kitchen, almost stripped out and ready for first fixing.

Better get off now, i gave an estimate to do.

Sunday

Sunday, aaaggghhh Sunday. I have not done a lot today, I think I sniffed the barmaids apron once to often last night, and now have a bit of a thick head. Its been a long arduous day, mainly involving dog sitting, compile a couple of estimates and a few invoices……and napping.

I did manage to venture out earlier and do some debit collecting. That makes me sound like a big bloke in a black suit, shirt and tie that nips round and hassles old ladies for a few quid. But its not like that, I gently tap on someone’s door, and ask nicely for settlement of the debit they owe me, and I only do this when I have written and called them repeatedly.

Anyway, been awake for around 20 minutes now, time for another nap.

Saturday

The real ale festival is now only a couple of hours away, just a quick train journey them………..an orgy of real ales. All those different tastes dancing on my tongue. Ye gods I cant begin to explain how much I am looking forward to it…..you get the impression that I am a real ale fan?

This morning I fitted a some outside lights and a couple of fans in extension I have been working at for a while now. Must say the extension looks great. It was built by Fisher Building and Roofing (shameless plug). This is a small building contractor, but Rob (Fisher) demands a really high standard of work himself, and expects every other trade to have the sane demands of themselves, they make a wonderful job and is with out and doubt is one of the best builders in the area.

Here is a picture Rob just beginning to sorting out the front garden. Could not get a picture of his buddy Paul. As soon as I brought out the camera he was off. I didn’t know anything with just 2 legs could move that fast….well I suppose he is a shy retiring soul, bless his little cotton socks!!!!

Here are a couple of pictures of an almost complete extension. Mr Donahue is tiling the floor himself, and is making a fabulous job. In a week or 2 he will be fitting the kitchen, once that is complete I can finish the kitchen off. It’s a pity because I have really enjoyed working for this couple.

Anyway off the beer festival now.

Mushroom.

A mushroom walks into a bar and the bartender looks at him and says, "Hey we don't serve vegetables here!" The mushroom snaps back, "But I'm a FunGi!"

Sorry for that! Just my sense of humour.

Friday.

The Winter Ales Festival looms large, I will be like a kid in a sweet shop…. probably wont sleep tonight. Do you get the impression I like real ale. Don’t think my girlfriend is all that enthusiastic spending hours and hours listening to “going on” about each of the ales. It’s the simple things that make life worth living.

Today I have been back over to Accrington to second fixing a house. I seem to be spending a lot of time there but never getting anywhere. I think its because the everyone there likes to “blether” and we spend more time having long intellectual (?) conversations about evolution and the depletion of fish stocks than working. Well perhaps those are not exactly the topics of conversation, but we did talk about fish today…well I was asked if I wanted fish or sausage from the chippie. That was probably the most difficult decision I made today…I had sausage by the way.

I had an argument with my girlfriend earlier. Can you believe it she has  accused me of living in a fantasy world…...yes me!  So I waved my magic wand at her and shouted "Expelliarmus". THAT SORTED HER!!!

Only one more sleep left to the winter ales festival…..how good is that…..did I mention that I was going?

Thursday

I got home from my night shift around 6.30 am and decided to have a quick cup of coffee and while watching breakfast news. The plan was working well at this point, but not for long. Anyway, I put my feet up on the coffee table and rested the cup of strong black coffee on my stomach. About 3 hours later my girlfriend came into the lounge, work my up and gave me such a fright the coffee spilt all over my body, the sofa and the dog that decided it wanted a “kip beside dad”….she was not pleased. Neither was my girlfriend who had to clear it up because I was late for my first appointment. So a quick shower later and I was off out.

Thankfully, today I only had three little jobs scheduled, none of which required any thought. I say thankfully because I lost the power of rational thought about 3am.

My first two job of the day were replacing outside lights…..no thought needed there. And my final job was to find a fault in a lighting circuit….a little thought required, but not a lot.

I have loads to do tomorrow, and have been warned under the penalty of death that I must be home by 4.30. After tomorrow comes Saturday, a quick job in the morning, then off to the winter ale festival in Manchester.

More tomorrow.

Wednesday.

I occasionally sub contract for a large electrical testing and Inspection Company, and I worked all last night testing, then again today doing my own scheduled work. Although I did sleep earlier, you could hardly call it a nap, more like a na.

First job was to discuss a cable route with a builder, then to a site in clithero to repair some lights and finally to Accrington.

I am now off to my night shift job testing. So assume I make it through the night, I will be back tomorrow.

Tuesday.

Seem to have done a lot of running around today and achieved nothing substantial. Didn’t start to around 9 today, which is very late for me and I now reagret it, should have got up earlier and got my glasses sorted. One of the screws come off legs and it cost me seven quid…yes I will repeat that seven quid to have it replaced. I almost collapsed in a heap when he asked for it.

Mini rant over. Fist job of the day (after dick turpin, the optician) was to finish the first fix of the kitchen I was wiring recently. They are nice people,  but talk a lot. But they can continually make me cups of tea / coffee. Finished that around lunchtime, then nipped to a repeat Accrington to replace a main switch, then off to Ramsbottom to another repeat customer to install 3 lights, and play with the 2 year old lad. We usually end up playing builders, or watching a wee bit of a day. Today I watched about 10 minutes of the Iron Giant while enjoying a cuppa and chatting to mum and granny. Then a drive home and got caught in an accident on the M65.

Got loads to do tomorrow, looking forward to it already.

Monday.

Monday is over and done with…..well almost, still got some certificates, invoices and estimates to do. Whoever said working for yourself was easy?

My first job was to start a first fix of a kitchen, got about half of it done, finish it off tomorrow. My after work job was at a doctors surgery, was only a half hour job after the surgery closed. Well it should have been a half hour job, unfortunately one of the doctors decided to work until 7pm, so I had to wait around to finished before I could switch the electricity, but I was finished around 7.30.

Now at home just about to have my tea.

Sunday....again!

Sunday should be a day of rest, putting your feet up, staying in bed late pottering around and watching the football in the pub in the afternoon, well that’s what its like for most people…..but not me. No. No. No. Not me. I was up early, sorted out my van stock for next week. Then went to a small job to replace a small job in a kitchen, however, I had been given the wrong defuser, so I need to go back next week. But first I need to sort the wholesaler out. I am not happy, makes me look like a fool.

Second job was first fixing a job I surveyed on Friday. It took me around 4 hours, so I was home early. Sunday is the day I do all my paperwork, and part P notifications etc, but its something I can do in my lounge with my girlfriend messes and plays with the dog…..aaaaaggghhh domestic bliss.

Saturday

There goes another Saturday, I have been second fixing an extension I started a few weeks ago, all the plastering has been finished so I thought I would nip round and get the light and sockets sorted. It looks really good, but will look a lot better when painted. I have used 5 watt LED’s in the main area and think they look brill. Anyway, I managed to get just about everything in the main part of the extension fitted, tested and switched on. The client is delighted; I will be going back next weekend to finish off the new kitchen, garage and outside lights.

My second job was to replace an outside light for a housing association I look after. Then surveyed another job.

The good news is that I am now sitting at home with a beer watching a “star wars movie”. The even better news is that my partner is going out tonight so I am ordering take out and will be in charge of the remote control……bliss. Its all mine!!!! Well at least until she comes back.

Friday.

Went to survey a job this morning in a beautiful in a development. The main contractor is Fisher Building & Roofing. They are a small building company in Preston, and make a fabluious job. Rob and Paul are a bit like Batman & Robin, or more probably Laurel & Hardy. I always have a goodtime when I work with them.

From they I went to survey a job at a fish & chip shop, but the owner was not in so it was a wasted journey. From they I surveyed another job for a housing association where there are a couple of outside lights require to be replaced. From here I surveyed another job, at an insurance company where I have to install 8 panel heaters.

As if that’s not enough, I finished off the day at a house in Accrington that I am rewiring. I am just about ready to wire the downstairs sockets…..phew, I will be delighted when I finish that house. Anyway about 4ish, myself and the other trades guys (and lady) finished, and as there is a pub next door it would have been rude not to nip in for a pint. But as I was driving I only had and 1 that was a shandy.

That’s its for today, now at home putting me feet up.

Yet another good day! I went to the job I was at yesterday in Formby to install some outside lights. I was shocked and stunned when I opened the curtains this morning……why do I hear you cry, because it the sun was shining and it was a lovely bright winters morning. This is extremely unusual because I was working outside installing some lights in Formby, and to be frank its never fine when I work outside, even in the summer. Its always raining, cold and generally blowing a gale. So it was an unexpected pleasure not to be working outside dressed like a michelin man.

The outside lights look fantastic, I am really pleased with the.

My first after hours job was to nip round to an old ladies and sort out a lighting fault, my second was to fit a cooker, she was lovley but kept me talking for hours.

Got loads to do tomorrow, a few job surveys and start second fix in a house.

Wednesday.

Another good day. I have been working at a house in Formby. I wired an extension late last year and Joe and Phil now want a load of other “mods” done to the home. It’s the first time that I have seen the extension since it was decorated and carpeted. Even if I do say so myself its looks amazing. Without appearing to be conceited the electrics are fab. By the time it’s all completed they will have completely re decorated and nice new satin sockets throw out.

I am back there tomorrow to finish off the outside decorative lights. Just hope its not to cold, windy, rainy, snowy or freezing. I know, I know I am asking a lot for January, but I can dream. Talking about dreaming I should have an early night tonight, but as Shameless is on I think the chances of that rate between zero and minus zero.

My after hours job was at a doctors surgery where I have been wiring some sockets lately, was hoping to complete tonight, but could not obtain access to a room to isolate the electricity. Never mind, I will finish it later in the week.

Not a good day, I was up late today which meant I had to rush to Accrington to let in Mandy the plasterer, Andy the joiner and Steve the roofer. When I arrived there was no one there and they didn’t turn up all day. Could have had a lie on after all. At least Monday is over.
