How difficult can it be to buy a chair!….answer VERY!

Call me naive (hello naïve) call me stupid, call me stupid and thick but I thought the process of buying a chair would be a simple and painless. NO…NO….NO. after battling my way through the traffic, fighting my way passed fellow shoppers I eventually found my way sweating and panting into a chair shop. After having a good look around placing my big old ass on several of there finest chairs. I eventually found a recliner that was just perfect.  

After that process I had two choices, I could either stick the chair under my arm and head for the door trying to dodge the security cameras, or the second choice and the one I opted for, which involved attracting the attention of a attendant, ordering the chair, arranging delivery, then making the required payment….should be simple enough eh. Unfortunately, this is where the process came apart.  

Attendant are like the tooth fairy, everyone has heard of them but no one actually find one, anyway, I had to hunt for one like a big game hunter tracking down a wise old an elephant who wasn’t wanting to be shot. Just imagine how “chuffed”  I was when I eventually found one cowering in the corner talking to his attendant mates. He was battered and had one to many shandys last night (don’t mind that we have all been there)  but when I pointed to the chair and told him I want one of those, he tried to sell me a sofa. The conversation went like this.

• Me - I would like that chair.
• Garry - (the attendant) good choice I have one if those….yeh right.
• Me - any discount for cash?
• Garry - we don’t accept cash.
• Me - sorry i thought you said “you don’t accept cash”
• Garry - that’s right we don’t!
• Me - why?
• Garry - its policy…would you like the sofa to match the chair?
• Me - No just the chair…cant believe you don’t accept cash!
• Garry - we don’t..sorry..the sofa is great, great for lounging on.
• Me - Don’t want the sofa, just the chair..it’s a recliner I can lounge on that. I have money in my wallet and you wont accept it?
• Garry - NO. The sofa is £375, if you buy the sofa and chair together we can do it for £320 but don’t tell the manager….that’s a BARGIN!
• Me -  no its only a barging if you want and need it, it’s a waste of money if you don’t.
• Garry – if I ask the manger we could probably let it go for £310.
• Me…don’t bother I only want the chair.
• Garry….sorry we cant sell that chair without you buying the sofa as well.

If you are still conscious after that, I wont push my luck and tell you how the rest of the conversation went, however, needless to say I lost the will to live and returned home chair-less.  

Think I will do some internet shopping!

Will the world end on May 21st…your thoughts?

 Judgement day is almost upon us and its 21^st of May. Its not something that I have just made up apparently its someone where in the bible, as I am not a scholar of all things biblical I guess you will have to find its yourself. I really really hope the prediction is wrong because factory job booked in of June.  

The other prediction I have heard of is that the world will end on 21^st December 2012. Wouldn’t you know it just before Christmas, and around the time of the holidays, I will have probably bought most of the pressies by them and endured months of Christmas advertising.  

The world ending…eh…just likes busses, you wait a couple of million years for one to come then 2 arrive within a couple of years.

Puppies or Kittens?

Strange thing for an electrician to ask! And my regular reader will think I have finally lost my mind. However, there is method in my madness, or is it madness in my method. But I was working late last night thinking about how I could improve comments readers’ leave. Then the answer came like a lightning bolt from the sky. Puppies and kittens…. everybody loves em. Cute little Labrador puppies and fluffy little kittens what's not to like! 

Personally I am a lover of hounds, mans best friend etc etc. dogs can be trained to fetch sticks, roll over, give a paw or sit, where cats can be trained to…eh use a litter tray…and well that’s about it…. i think. 

My regular reader will be aware that I can talk pretty much for ever, but I am struggling with this a wee bit, so I am going to leave it there!  

As you will sense my knowledge of K9’s and felines is vast so if you have a question please ask it.

Fuse box change.

Footie, fantastic weather and Magners, is there a better way to spend a Thursday Evening?

After a very warm and exhausting day I am now at home relaxing and waiting for the football to start.

This morning I was drilling a couple of large holes in walls for extract fans. This one of these jobs I hate, and would rather have sex with a sweaty horse called Mabel than do and its probably why apprentices were put on this earth.

This afternoon, I was working at Rob Fishers (www.fisherbuildingservices.co.uk) finishing (well almost) his attic conversion. When its finished it will be fabulious.

I have decided to tell you about the method of changing a fuse box to a modern consumers unit. This is an electrical job that should always be left to a competent electrician.

I get asked to price a fuse box to a consumers unit about two times per month, and for someone who is trained it’s relatively straightforward and simple and will take around a day.

The first step is important. It involves testing the house. We need to do this because we cannot reconnect any circuit which are present an immediate danger or potentially dangerous, and there are a great many circuits out there that have either decayed with age, or DIYers have “had a go” and installed additional accessories and completely messed it up. Another function of the test is that if done properly it will highlight problems that will cause unwanted tripping of an RCD (this is a sensitive device that is found in modern consumers units, and switches off the electricity when a fault occurs) If we find any such problems they would need to be rectified before the fuse box is changed.

We also need to consider the

• Earthing arrangement for the house – we are required to ensure that your house has adequate eathing, this will involve the electrician wanting to see the gas meter and water stop cock. Strange things for an electrician wanting to see I know, but we are required to ensure that these services are earthed with the properly sized earth wire. If its not present than it will need to be installed before the fuse board is changed.
• Main tails to the fuse box – these are the two grey wires that supply electricity to the fuse box, and if incorrectly sized will need to be changed.  Some of the other issues that need to be considered before. 

Assuming that everything is ok to this point, the fuse board can be changed. This is literally a matter of disconnection the old one, then replacing with the new consumers unit. There will almost certainly be some cables that are to sort to be routed into the new positions, these will need to be jointed before terminating into the new locations.

After all that has been done, there are a few more tests required and the house made live again. After completion you should be issued with a certificate or it will be mailed to you along the invoice.

I often get asked over the telephone how much will it cost to replace a consumers unit, where I can give them a ball park figure, it will not include any remedial works, upgrading the earthing etc. the actual cost of replacing a consumers unit only depends where you live in the country, I have seen prices from as little as £275 to £550. But as previously stated this is unlikely to include remedial works.

It is also worth noting, that these works fall under Part P of the building regulations and should only be undertaken by someone who is registered as a Domestic Installer. I have attached a link to the building regulations. (http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/br/BR_PDF_ADP_2006.pdf)

What a weekend! How good was yours?

At last I am back home, with my feet up and enjoying a nice cuppa…for my regular reader they will by familiar with my drinking, but less familiar with drinking a non-alcoholic beverage. I was in Glasgow over the last couple of days with my kids, because they live at the other end of the country I only see them once each month or five weeks, but when I do I love every minute of it. My daughter is massively intelligent and a pleasure to be with, she takes after her mother, where my son is annoying, loud, embarrassing and very funny, he takes after me. Anyway, its my lads 16^th birthday next month, so he conned me out of an early birthday present, a blackberry mobile which looks great, but while looking in every phone shop in the known world, I (well actually my lad decided for me) decide that I should be brought into the 21^st centaury and put away my old clunkity clunkity thing and up grade too. I am now the proud owner of a fancy android phone, which I cant work, cant seem to get connected to the net, pick up e mails and can barley use to make a call from, but it looks the part. Anyway I think what I need is the use of an adolescent child that can give this simple man some very simple instructions on the use of my fancy phone, either that or if my reader knows where I could hold of book called “mobile phones for dummies” that would do equally as well…. just make sure its lots of pictures.

Bank Holiday Friday – not for the self employed.

No rest for the wicked! Think I have been very bad in a past life. Was working today first fixing an extension. Unfortunately, like an eegit I forgot it was a bank holiday and could not get some of the stuff that I needed and now need to go back on Tuesday to finish up. The builder who is building the extension is Rob Fisher (www.fisherbuildingservices) they are excellent builders and really sociable. Another weird dream.

Last night I had a dream that I was John Cougar Mellencamp (80s singer of Jack and Daine) I was on stage playing to a packed stadium with a full band and thousands of screaming adoring fans. Anyway, I work up to Chris Evans on radio 2 at 6.30, jumped out of bed, made myself a cup of coffee when “than song”, the song I had been singing all night in my sleep came on the radio. So what’s a tired, poor but happy spark go to do…dance around the flat while drinking my coffee. Now hot liquid and I don’t get on that well, and this was no different, I tripped over shoe while jigging away and poured the coffee down my tee shirt and burnt my nipples. At that point the singing stopped, the dancing stopped and the screaming started.

Anyway, after the dancing, singing and screaming it was of to work. First job was back to Clithereo to install the final outside light for Fairhaven Housing Association http://www.fairhavenha.co.uk/. They are specialist in retirement housing and have some fabulous housing estates. I then went to debt collect in Blackburn, but predictably there was a problem and I came away empty handed, it was the same old story, “sorry my wife has the cheque book”, so I will pop round next week, this has been dragging on for about 2 months now.

After that I went to see a job I am starting tomorrow, it’s a small extension to be wired for Fisher Building and Roofing (www.fisherbuildingservices.co.uk) These guys are really good builders, probably, one of the best in the area, so if you need any building work, give Rob a call. Another busy day

After another long day, I am now sitting here relaxing with a vodka & coke watching the tube. Aaaggghhh one of life’s simple pleasures but offers so much joy. Nothing better after a hard day slouching on the sofa with some drivel on the TV that doesn’t need any thought. I have still some paperwork to do, but for once I will leave that until tomorrow. 

I have had been a busy old day installing some decking lights, not a job that stretches me but the day was that wonderful I loved every minute of it. What made it even better is that the homeowners were wonderful, really nice people and they used to live where I used to live so we had loads in common, we even frequented the same pubs knew some of the same people…well bar maids and landlords mainly.  

After that I surveyed a couple of small jobs and did some appliance testing for a landlord. That was enough for any day!

Another fabulous day in paradise….or as near as Preston gets to paradise. I am really glad to be home tonight, its been a long day. And the good news is that tonight I managed to cook a meal with out falling asleep and burning the flat down, forgetting about it or forgetting to switch the over on, so I had a proper meal, lets hope my culinary skills continue, because its got to be said my meal tonight was a culinary delight. The type of food that should be served to kings & queens, presidents and heads of state.  

Today I have been working in Clitheroe, installing some outside lights for Fairhaven Housing Association http://www.fairhavenha.co.uk/. They are specialist in retirement housing and have some fabulous housing estates. Something I have learned while working in their estates is that elderly really appreciate having their own home. I think it gives them a sense of dignity having there own front door. So much better than residential or care homes. 

After finishing there I nipped to my mates for a cup of the murky brown liquid that passes for tea in his house, anyway I ended up repairing his electric gates which is miraculous because I know nothing about electric gates! After that I repaired a cooker, I usually stay well clear of white goods but with business being slow I thought what the hell.  

I also had some bad news (well not so good anyway) recently I started to rewire a house. I had completed the first fix (installing the cables, back boxes etc) but I had to wait for a while until the other trades had finished before I could finish off my bit. Well today I got a call form the owner telling me he wasn’t going to pay for the first fix because he had sold the house ½ finished, anyway he offered my £500 which was less that half the invoiced amount. I am not going to worry, fret or loose any sleep about it. Will make an appointment with a solicitor in the morning, then get him to sort it out. I am sick to death of people taking the piss. It’s a real problem, people often either have work done then say “sorry, times are hard at the moment”, want to pay by instalments or just refuse to pay outright because they could never afford to pay in the first instance. Its happening more and more as the recession bites, I am now going to start asking for a deposit for the materials.  

I have a good day planned tomorrow, should be busy all day and a couple of jobs to survey in the evening.

Slow day at the office

Another slow day! My first job of the day wasn’t until 10, then I was home around 4, that’s not good. I have managed to beat the recession for the last 3 years, but over the last couple of months things have started to slow down, I have also had a couple of large customers go out of business. Not to worry, I am trying hard to replace them. Doing lost of marketing and networking, I also have loads of people that I work for looking out for work. I also have a new web site going on line on Saturday. I have a first class web designed Harry Rashid designing it for me. He is a first class designer, and has helping a lot with marketing ideas. What to do if your lights stop working.

If your lights stop working its relatively simple to diagnosing if its just the bulb / lamp that has failed or the circuit breaker has tripped or a fuse has blown. Basically, all you need to do is try a light in another room. If the lamp has failed, then switch it off at the wall then replace it. If not look at the fuse board and establish if the circuit breaker has tripped, if so reset it. If you have fuse wire, pull out the fuse bridge, (the lighting circuit will have two white dots) then rewire with 5 amp fuse wire and replace it. If after replacing the fuse wire, or resetting the circuit breaker it trips again, call an electrician to diagnose the fault, never try repeatedly, as this may make the fault worse and impair safety.

Never attempt to complete electrical work unless you feel comfortable to do so. Always switch off electricity before starting work. Most electrical installation work in homes come under the Part P of the Building Regulations, and if you attempt it yourself you will contravening them and may be prosecuted, additionally if you do not have proper certification and building control approval you may have problems with house sales and future insurance claims.

The text below is fabricate and a nonsense. I have only included this to help my goggle rating. Hidden in the text there are key worked, which should help me, get a better ranking.  Over the last few days I have rewired a house, which took me a while. in the house fuse box  and consumers unit, which had to be replaced with a replacement fuse box.  There were a few additional sockets, which I had to install too. I had to wire a wiring extension, and install additional down lights and additional lights including additional outside lights.  I needed to wire a AEG cooker; there was also some new outside lights and a mira shower too.
