A few simple tips for electrical safety

Always use a RCD short for (RESIDUAL CURRENT DEVICE) when working outside-if you were to cut through the cable of a lawnmower or a trimmer for instance, the RCD would immediately cut off the power supply before is reaches your body and has the chance to give you an electric shock.

Always make sure all your electrical pipes are bonded, this reduces the risk of a fatal electrical shock especially in a dangerous place like the bathroom, this is a silver "bonding" clamp which is attached to all pipes by linking them using a yellow and green earth wire to join all the pipes.

Never overload an extension socket-always read the maximum wattage or output of the extension socket; If you can plug in items up to 1,000 watts for instance-do not attempt to overload it with 1,200 and so on the maximum is there for a reason-overload it and you risk melting the sockets, destroying the appliances plugged into it and also the possibility of a fire risk.

Never attempt any electrical work that is beyond your capabilities-The building regulations of England and Wales: Part P refers to what you can do without informing building control so read this information of get a copy from here: http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/br/BR_PDF_ADP_2006.pdf

If you notice any smell of burning wires or black marks around the sockets then switch off the main fuse box and call an electrician.
