Preston Electrician

Hip, Hip Horary! I have been paid! I can now come off bread and water and start eating meat again I can also put shoes on the kids feet….well perhaps not, lets not get carried away,  after all its almost summer. On a serious note cash flow is a real problem for small business, and slow payers or even worse no payers does cause havoc. So please pay small business by return of post.

Anyway, its been another  busy week, some highs and lows. I have spent most of the week installing panel heaters in a insurance brokers in Blackburn. I have worked in this office many times before, but its now been renovated from top to bottom so I don’t think I will be in the office again. However, the owner has recommended me to his family and friends, so I have made great contact.

I have been told that I need increase the focus electrical issues, so I thought I would try to include tips, hints and info. I have found this really difficult, because I don’t want to give the impression that electrical work is easy to the inexperienced or inform my reader on methods of undertaking electrical work that should be completed by an electrician.

What to do if your socket stops working.

This can be really inconvenient and cause havoc and can be expensive if your freezer is connected into the affected circuit.

The first thing that you need to establish is if it’s the appliance or just the socket has failed. This can be checked with another appliance that you know is working, ie an electric radio or toaster. Basically plug it into the socket under suspision and if it operates correctly then you can be pretty sure that the fault lies with the appliance.

If the test appliance does not work, the fault lies with the circuit, and you will need
to check the fuse box. If the RCD / circuit breaker has tripped or the fuse has blown, unplug all appliances and then reset the breaker or rewire / replace the fuse, then one by one plug in all the appliances back in. Make sure to switch off the main switch on the consumers unit before replacing fuse wire. And always replace with the correct size. Never use larger fuse wire, as this will impair the safety of the circuit.

If the breaker / RCD won't reset at all or the fuse blows contact a qualified electrician to test the circuit, never try repeatedly, as this may make the fault worse and impair safety.

Never attempt to complete electrical work unless you feel comfortable to do so. Always switch off electricity before starting work. Most electrical installation work in domestic properties come under the Part P of the Building Regulations, and if you attempt it yourself you will contravening them and may be prosecuted, additionally if you do not have proper certification and building control approval you may have problems with house sales and future insurance claims.

If you have any electrical problems, please drop me an e-mail and let me see if I can help.

Until next time, thanks for taking the time to read this and don’t forget to let me know what you think, I will be glad to receive comments, good or bad.

Thanks again. Ian
