A few simple tips for electrical safety

Always use a RCD short for (RESIDUAL CURRENT DEVICE) when working outside-if you were to cut through the cable of a lawnmower or a trimmer for instance, the RCD would immediately cut off the power supply before is reaches your body and has the chance to give you an electric shock.

Always make sure all your electrical pipes are bonded, this reduces the risk of a fatal electrical shock especially in a dangerous place like the bathroom, this is a silver "bonding" clamp which is attached to all pipes by linking them using a yellow and green earth wire to join all the pipes.

Never overload an extension socket-always read the maximum wattage or output of the extension socket; If you can plug in items up to 1,000 watts for instance-do not attempt to overload it with 1,200 and so on the maximum is there for a reason-overload it and you risk melting the sockets, destroying the appliances plugged into it and also the possibility of a fire risk.

Never attempt any electrical work that is beyond your capabilities-The building regulations of England and Wales: Part P refers to what you can do without informing building control so read this information of get a copy from here: http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/br/BR_PDF_ADP_2006.pdf

If you notice any smell of burning wires or black marks around the sockets then switch off the main fuse box and call an electrician.

If you have any electrical problems, please drop me an e-mail and let me see how I can help.

If you like blog, then please follow me. I don’t bite!

Until next time, thanks for taking the time to read this and don’t forget to let me know what you think, I will be glad to receive comments, good or bad.

Thanks again. Ian

Honest Electrician in Preston. That’s Me!

After a long, long, long day I am now relaxing with rather large vodka and coke while my meal is slowly but surly being cremated in the oven. I love the smell of charcoal and the blue haze that obscures the fact that I need to dust.

Anyway, once again I was working in Accrington, where the must have traffic wardens lying in wait for a poor unsuspecting electrician of off load the van in the morning, then before you have a chance to move the van WHALLOP! A ticket has been under the wiper, and the warden is merrily skipping down the road. Traffic Wardens…don’t you just love em? Wouldn’t mind so much but I was only empting the van at 9.30, I must have been away for about 2 minutes.

On the way home I got a call from elderly customer that I worked for recently, asking me to pop round and pick up the cheque, I was only to delighted because I knew I would get a piece of scrumptious home mad cake…..mmmmhhhh……salivating just thinking about the perfectly made moist carrot cake. (Sorry I digress) Anyway I nipped round and while we were chatting I was handed the cheque and told “that right” I said that’s great, but while they were giving me the cheque I was being offered another piece of heaven on a plate. So you could say I was distracted, but while I was driving home I realised that value of the cheque wrong, but in a good way. They had over paid me by £350.00, after realising it wasn’t an early Christmas present and unlikely to be a tip it dawned on me that it must be an error. When I arrived home I checked the estimate then called this lovely couple, they were delighted at my honesty, I told them I would drop the cheque off on Monday when I am passing. For my honesty I am being baked a carrot cake and to a chocolate cake too boot.

Do you need a good, honest electrician I Preston? If so give me call.

If you like blog, then please follow me. I don’t bite!

Until next time, thanks for taking the time to read this and don’t forget to let me know what you think, I will be glad to receive comments, good or bad.

Thanks again. Ian

Ever noticed how many web site designers are calling now?

 They must be physic, looking in a crystal ball or be spying on me, because they always call when I am busy. Once you start talking to them, they will tell you they will do this, do that and wave a magic want over your site to your site on the first page of goggle…. sounds fantastic…. then the painful but. Its only going to cosy you a small fortune, someone today told me its only going to cost £200 a month, I guess that is around the national income of a small Baltic state. If someone could prove that that they could actually do what they say, I may give it a punt. However, every caller has the same opening line, where they guarantee to get you on the front page of google, and always say something like “just think how much more business you will get”. AAAGGGGHHH makes me mad…..i have a frown on my face at the moment. If you could see me now you will see I have a frown on my face. Anyway, if every company that calls, gets everyone they want on the front page, the front page will have around 26503 entries.

Anyway, now for the work bit. I am still working in Accrington converting an old office into a shop with a flat above.

As part of my 30-day challenge, I should be posting photos. I would dearly love to have the ability to post the odd picture…. my regular reader will know that I use to do this all the time, however, since the camera went in the washer a couple of months its never been the same. My phone was made when dinosaurs roamed the planet, so I cant take photos with that. I now have a dilemma; do I invest in a new camera, or a fancy phone? What do you think?

If you have any electrical problems, please drop me an e-mail and let me see how I can help, also if you like blog, then please follow me. I don’t bite, well not very often, and only on a Thursday…owe it is Thursday.

Until next time, thanks for taking the time to read this and don’t forget to let me know what you think, I will be glad to receive comments, good or bad.

Could this day get any better?

 The sun is shining, the grass is growing and the lovers are loving and I am home at a reasonable, so how can this day get any better…. well simple. At 7.30 tonight Chelsea are playing Man United, so I have the cider is chilling and the pizza will be arriving at just before the footie starts…. how excited am I. My reader will realise that I am a simple man, who enjoys simple pleasures and frankly you don’t get a lot more simple than that!

My reader will know that I am completing the 30 challenge, and my task today is to attach a picture. So I have decided to add this…..it’s a picture of a baby I here you cry! Well yes, I know. It’s actually a picture of my mates Simon & Amanda’s new baby Katie Jane. She is as cute as a button and I can’t wait to meet her!

 Anyway, on the work front I have been relatively busy. I have been converting the electrics in a shop into two different systems, 1 for the shop and the other for a flat, which will be developed within the next couple of weeks.

Still in a good mood, whats going on?

I am generally in a good mood and am content with my lot, but over the last few weeks I have been springing out of bed and awake very early (that could be partially due to only fitting curtains on Sunday) I have been cleaning the flat before work, even managed to do some ironing at 6.45am. Not quite sure what is going on!

Anyway enough of that nonsense. As part of my 30 day blogging challenge (http://www.nikkipilkington.com/blog/2011/03/23/the-nikki-p-30-day-blogging-challenge-is-here/) I need to tell you about myself. So goes, I am a 48 year Aquarian and qualified as an electrician 30 years ago, since then I have done a variety of jobs but keep coming back to sparking. Probably because I enjoy it and am good at it. I have been married twice (goes to show I don’t learn by my mistakes) and have two fantastic children, a daughter, Rachae who is studying at Glasgow Uni, and a 15 year old son, Andrew, who is studying for has exams.

I moved to Preston around 5 years ago, met a lass Anne, and decided to stay, so after a while I started Johnstones Electrical Services. I am mainly a domestic electrician, but would love to get involved in commercial and industrial work. I was an industrial spark for years and really it. I tend to work to much, but really enjoy that, I also enjoy comedy shows on TV and football, messing about on the internet.

That’s all I am going to say about myself, not because its secret, but because its all very boring an mundane, and unless I am careful you will lapse into unconsciousness.

Something else i should mention is the 30 day challenge, I am on day 7 and have got to say its brilliant. If you are either a blogger or thinking about becoming a blogger, wht not give it a bash. Its free.

Until next time, thanks for taking the time to read this and don’t forget to let me know what you think, I will be glad to receive comments, good or bad.

Thanks again. Ian

Why am i in such a good mood?

I have a really good day today. Not on the work front its been a bit slow, with only a survey and a couple of hours later in the day installing some out side lights, thinking about it the weather was not good and it was raining farley heavenly, but not even that could dampen my spirits….No, No, No. Not sure why I am in such a good mood, after all it’s a Monday, cold and raining. I have a mates that believe insanity runs in my family, I am beginning to think must be right and the insane gene has eventually caught up with me.

On the work front, I have surveyed an inspection of a care home, its not a bad job, and I will be working with my mate Alan from (Richardsons Electrical Services). He is an all round good guy and relatively new to the electrical work, so I have been taking him under my wing when it comes to testing. Alan was employed in another field (as a scarecrow) two or three years ago, but retrained as an electrician, and will soon be training again, but this time as a plumber. Got to take my hat off to him, he really is trying to make good living for himself. And I am sure if he has a foot in both camps, he will.

My afternoon job was a nice simple one. Replace some outside lights for a really nice couple, with a really nice dog who seemed to take a shine to me (but the least said about that the better).

Dont forget, if you have any electrical problems, let me know because i will be delighted to help, and if you like blog, then please follow me. What’s the worst thing that cold happen?

What madness is this?

I am about to say the “C” word. If you are easily offended don’t read the next sentence and look away now…you looking away…. you sure? Then I will continue. CURTAINS. They you I have said it! I fully appreciate the necessity for these ridiculous bits of cloth, but have you ever tried to hang a pair? Ye gods, what evil genius invented such an evil contraption. First of you need to hang the rail, my god it is like the krypton factor. You need to screw little plastic brackets to the window…no problem. Then cut the rail to the correct length…no problem. Then mount the rail onto the brackets…. BIG PROBLEM, HUGE PROBLEM, in fact the problem is the size of a small state in America. It is impossible to mount these! Just IMPOSSIBLE. So I decided to take a break and put the hangers onto the curtains…. no problem. Then putt some drawstrings and the curtains are supposed to ruffle…should not have been a problem, but was. Nobody told me that I needed to hold the other end of the draw tape as I pulled it, so I pulled it out. Anyway, I ended up holding the entire draw tape with the ruffle-less curtains laid out before me. Not a problem, I can put them up ruffle free is what I thought. Eh no. After 2 hours of nashing my teeth, stamping my feet and pulling my hair out I decided it was not an electricians lot in life an abandoned the job. the good news is that I have arrived at a cunning plan to block out the light…..i have used drawing pins. Should not be for long my 70 year old mother is visiting shortly, she will know what its all about.  I came up with a cunning plan I have now used some drawing pins

I have a top tip for you. If my reader is considering putting up curtains, get your granny or your mother to undertake the entire escapade. It will save your sanity!

On the work front, not much of a job today, just as well or I would have missed all the fun with the curtains.

If you like this, then please follow to this blog. What’s the worst thing that cold happen?

Until next time, thanks for taking the time to read this.

Why are Saturdays wonderful?

Not just Saturdays, Sundays too. I work a lot in people homes, and often during the week they are a bit morose, but when it comes to the weekend…wow what a difference. I was working in a the home of a couple who are generally “doom and gloom” personified, but today they almost smiled at some of my witty banter, (that term is loosely). I was delighted with the reaction. Thinking about it, rather than smiling they may have been wind, or just being polite…no, no, sure it was a smile.

I think you and I could start a campaign to have 3 weekends a week. Just think how wonderful that would be, everyone smiling…..people would live longer, crime would fall, poverty would become a thing of the past….well perhaps not, but no-one would care because they are too busy being happy.

You are no doubt wondering what I have been doing today. Well I have been rewiring a circuit of socket that some cowboy rewired a few years ago. To be honest I am surprised that this lovely couple did not wake up in the morning and find the house in cinders around their bed. When the cowboy wired it he broke about every cardinal rule there is. When they called me and said they were having problems, I tested the circuit and was stunned that a so-called electrician could leave a circuit in suck a poor condition. But to end on a good note, its been rewired and will be good for many more years.

If my reader, is considering having any electrical work done, please make sure they are Part P registered, and ask for references. I generally carry a list, and if the job is sizable, I will gladly arrange for them to inspect some previous work.

Friday

I have been wondering recently if anyone actually reads this, and I’m not sure anyone actually does, anyway, someone tweeted about the 30 day blogging challenge. From what I can gather I am set tasks each day and I have to include tasks into my blog. i.e to day I have to include “top tips”, to be honest I have thought about it for ages and the only “tip” I can think of is “don’t eat yellow snow”. I will need to give it a lot more thought.

Anyway. Today I have been working in West Lancashire, wiring a new extension. An absolutely simple job which is pretty much my bread and butter. The only slight problem with it is that the homeowner is building it himself, he bought a DIY book, and though “I will have a bash at that”. I hate to think what I will find when I return to finish off. Anyway, I gave him a few pointers about what to don next. Simple things like;
  • Plasterboard the ceiling before the walls;
  • Tape the joints before plastering;
  • Put noggins in to support the radiators;
  • Bits and pieces about tiling;

Thought of another “top tip” always maintain your van, I have been neglecting mine over the last year or so, and now its making some funny noises (but not in a humours way) don’t exactly know what it is but it sounds expensive.

In the unlikely event that someone is reading this, have a look at the 30 day blogging challenge. You may have better luck with the “top tips”

Thursday

As I sit reflecting on the day, all I can think about is how the hell did I manage to wake up with the  other of hangovers this morning. I thought it was a mystery that would bewilder the greatest minds of out time, then I remembered I had a late start this morning so I watched some late night TV and had a couple of drink while doing so. Note to self….don’t drink quite as much on a school night.

Anyhow. I had a job arranged today to test some student accomodation today. I had a request from the landlord to start the test after 10.30, I wasn’t to keen but I thought what the hell the late start will give me a chance to tidy up my lockup. So when I arrived at 10.30, the landlord opened the door and said “sorry don’t want it done any longer, have decided to sell the house. He then slammed the door. Bastard. I was not happy. I was really lucky that I could fill the afternoon buy installing a wireless thermostat at “Garstang Physio Clinc”. The owners are Simon & Lynley, and are absolutely fabulous people and if anyone ever needs there services, I could not recommend them highly enough, they will take great care of you!
