Does your house reed rewiring?

 There is no fixed time period between the rewires your house, this will be dictated by the age of the of the wiring and its condition. Years ago, it was common to have a house wired with only one or two socket circuits, one lighting circuit and perhaps a circuit servicing a cooker. Although this was perfectly adequate at the time, peoples lifestyles have changed, and we find that there are now many more appliances than could have been imagined when the house was wired. For example, you may have large fridge freezers, dish washers, games consoles, P.C, printers, TV’s in several rooms etc, some of which may be plugged into extension leads or adaptors.  It’s a similar scenario with lighting and cooking appliances, Homeowners have had added down lights or larger cooking appliances. The increase of various appliances adds electrical load to the circuits, this combined with the age of the installation will result in the cables deteriorating beyond the point its safe or financially viable to repair, its this that will dictate if you home requires to be rewired.  

There are a few ways that you can check to see if your house needs rewired.

1. Does you consumer unit have replaceable fuse wires?
2. Does any of your sockets or plugs heat up fast or have burn marks?
3. Do your fuses or circuit breakers trip regularly?
4. Do you need to use plug adapters or extensions?
5. Do your lights use old, twisted flex?
6. Are your cables rubber coated or old grey PVC.
7. Are you plugs and sockets rounded?
8. If you lights do not have earth wires at them.
9. Over the last 10 years, have you had your wiring checked?

This is not a inclusive list, there are many more indicators, so please don’t think that just because you don’t tick any of the above boxes, that your wiring is fine. The best way to find out if your home needs to be rewired is to have it tested by a qualified electrician.
