Do you know your Smoke Alarms.

Do you know that you are more twice as likely to die from a fire in your home if you haven’t got a working smoke alarm? A smoke alarm is the easiest way to alert you to the danger of fire, giving you time to escape.

How many smoke alarms do you need?

The more alarms you have, the safer you'll be - as long as they are working - so make sure you test them weekly. You should have a minimum of one alarm on each floor. However, if you have only one alarm and two floors, put it somewhere you’ll be able to hear it when you're asleep.

Types of smoke alarms;
Ionisation alarms - are the cheapest and most readily available smoke alarms. They are also very sensitive to 'flaming fires' - fires that burn fiercely, like chip-pan fires and will detect fires before the smoke gets too thick.

Optical alarms - are more expensive. However, they are more effective at detecting slow-burning fires, like smouldering foam-filled furniture or overheated wiring and are less likely to go off accidentally and so are best for ground-floor hallways and for homes on one level.

For the best protection, you should install one of each. However, if you can’t have both, it’s still safer to have either one, rather than none at all.

Smoke alarms for the deaf- these have a smoke alarm with a “strobe light” fitted to the ceiling and a vibrating which is placed beneath your pillow.

For more information on smoke alarms have a look at this site.  http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndCommunity/InYourHome/FireSafety/DG_071751

Fuseboxes Explained

Fuseboxes explained

Your Fusebox – the fusebox or consumer unit should be easy to find and you should  know where it is in case you ever need to turn the electricity off in an emergency. It usually contains three things and is used to control and distribute electricity around your home. These are:

A) Main Switch – this allows you to turn off the electricity supply to your home. You may have more than one mains switch, for example if your home has electric storage heaters, in this case you will have a separate fusebox.

B) Residual Current Devices (RCD) these are switches that instantly disconnects the circuit when it becomes dangerous. If your fusebox one or more RCD, test them regularly by pressing the “TEST” button. This is important because some of the mechanical parts may seize up and not trip when the circuit becomes dangerious.

C) Circuit Breakers – these are automatic protection devices in the fusebox that switch off a circuit if they detect a fault. They are similar in size to fuses, but give more precise protection. When they ‘trip’, you can simply reset the switch. But make sure you correct the fault first.

Fuses  (not on the image, may be found in place of circuit breakers) – rewirable fuses have a piece of special wire running between two screws. When a fault or overloaded current flows through the fuse wire, it will become hot and melt, this disconnects the faulty circuit from the electricity and keeping you safe.

If your fusebox has a wooden back, cast iron switches, or a mixture of fuses it is likely that it dates back to before the 1960s and may need to be replaced.

If you would like to discuss, your consumers unit or fusebox with me, please call me on my contact numbers. Tel 01772 879295,  Mob 07704 213224, e-mail jeservices@live.co.uk

Do It Yourself Electrical Jobs.

In today’s declining economy more and more people are turning towards completing home improvements themselves. Most people think that hiring an electrician can be expensive, and are attempting to complete many electrical jobs themselves.

However you need to realise that it takes careful planning and preparation to make sure the electrical jobs goes smoothly. Most of the time home improvement projects tend to save you money, but this is only the case if you have enough knowledge to complete the job competently and safely. Even minor electrical works can (and often do) go badly wrong when completed by DIY’ers. This can resulting electric shock to you or your family and fire, which your insurance company wont pay out on.

Most electricians don’t charge to provide an estimate, so why don’t you call one and ask them to pop round and see how much it will cost to complete your small electrical job. The chances are that it wont cost as much as you think and then you can rest assured that it’s done properly.

If you would like to discuss, your small electrical job, please call me on my contact numbers. Tel 01772 879295, Mob 07704 213224, e-mail jeservices@live.co.uk.

Protect you and your family from electric shock - fit a RCD.

A residual current device (RCD) is a safety device that switches off electricity automatically if there is a fault and are far more sensitive and give a greater degree of protection than normal fuses and circuit-breakers.

This means that that RCD’s can be a lifesaver, they constantly monitor electric current flowing along a circuit, and if it detects it flowing down an unintended path, such as through a person who has touched a live part, it will switch the circuit off very quickly, thereby significantly reducing the risk of death or serious injury.

Using electricity whilst wet significantly increases the risk of electric shock.  If you are wet it makes it easier for the electricity to flow through you into the ground. This is when an RCD can help protect you from a shock in areas, such as in bathrooms and gardens, where you may be wet. It is very important to have RCD protection when using electrical equipment outdoors, without one a simple job like mowing the lawn could turn into a deadly disaster if you cut through a lead.

There are 3 main type of RCD.

Fixed RCDs – are installed in the consumer unit (fusebox) and can provide protection to individual or groups of circuits, this provides the highest level of protection as it constantly protects all circuit and any connected appliances.
Fixed RCD in consumers units,

Socket-outlet RCDs – are built into a special socket-outlet that replaces a standard socket. This provides protection only to the person in contact with the equipment, including the leads, plugged into it.

RCD Socket-Outlet

Portable RCDs – plug into any standard socket outlet. An appliance can then be plugged into the RCD.  These are useful when neither fixed nor socket-outlet RCDs are available, but again they provide protection only to the person in contact with the equipment

Portable RCD

The UK standard for the safety of electrical installations

In July 2008 a new edition of the UK standard for the safety of electrical installations, BS 7671: 2008, came into effect. These standards calls for virtually all circuits in new or rewired homes, or homes that have circuits added to be provided with additional protection by means of an RCD.

 Testing RCDs
It is strongly recommended that you test all fixed and socket-outlet RCDs regularly (about every three months) by using the ‘test’ button built into them. Manufacturers recommend that portable RCDs are tested every time you use them.

Do not hold the test button in for a long time if the RCD does not trip. If the RCD does not switch off the supply when you use the test button, get advice from an electrician

A good tip is to always test your fixed RCDs when changing to and from daylight saving, as many electric clocks and timers have to be reset anyway.

Although RCD protection reduces the risk of death or injury from electric shock, it does not reduce the need to protect yourself, family and property by having your electrical wiring checked at least every 10 years.  If you think there is a fault with your wiring or an appliance, stop using it immediately and contact an electrician.

If you would like to discuss, how RCD's  can help protect you, pleas call me on my contact numbers. Tel 01772 879295, Mob 07704 213224, e-mail jeservices@live.co.uk.

V phase - cut your electricity bills

Everyone’s electricity bills are going up, people’s salaries are staying static and household budgets are stretched beyond belief. Help is at hand; a new piece of technology is now available.

The VPhase VX1 unit manages the voltage coming into your home. Typically, the energy suply for home use is at about 245v, but many appliances work as efficiently, or even more efficiently, at a lower voltage and therefore function equally well on less electricity. The VPhase unit reduces the voltage to 220v or below, and this reduces your electricity usage, and your bill. This type of technology has been used in industry for years, and is now available to the home market.

If you would like to find out if the V phase could help you, please call me on my contact numbers. Tel 01772 879295, Mob 07704 213224,

Does your house reed rewiring?

There is no fixed time period between the rewires your house, this will be dictated by the age of the of the wiring and its condition. Years ago, it was common to have a house wired with only one or two socket circuits, one lighting circuit and perhaps a circuit servicing a cooker. Although this was perfectly adequate at the time, peoples lifestyles have changed, and we find that there are now many more appliances than could have been imagined when the house was wired. For example, you may have large fridge freezers, dish washers, games consoles, P.C, printers, TV’s in several rooms etc, some of which may be plugged into extension leads or adaptors.  It’s a similar scenario with lighting and cooking appliances, Homeowners have had added down lights or larger cooking appliances. The increase of various appliances adds electrical load to the circuits, this combined with the age of the installation will result in the cables deteriorating beyond the point its safe or financially viable to repair, its this that will dictate if you home requires to be rewired.

There are a few ways that you can check to see if your house needs rewired.
1. Does you consumer unit have replaceable fuse wires?
2. Does any of your sockets or plugs heat up fast or have burn marks?
3. Do your fuses or circuit breakers trip regularly?
4. Do you need to use plug adapters or extensions?
5. Do your lights use old, twisted flex?
6. Are your cables rubber coated or old grey PVC.
7. Are you plugs and sockets rounded?
8. If you lights do not have earth wires at them.
9. Over the last 10 years, have you had your wiring checked?

This is not a inclusive list, there are many more indicators, so please don’t think that just because you don’t tick any of the above boxes, that your wiring is fine. The best way to find out if your home needs to be rewired is to have it tested by a qualified electrician.

If you would like find out if your house needs rewiring, please give me on my contact numbers. Tel 01772 879295, Mob 07704 213224, e-mail jeservices@live.co.uk.

Outside & Security Lighting

Outside lights are used to illuminate property in an effort to deter criminals or just light the way to the bin when putting the trash out. However there are other benefits of outdoor / security lights for your home or business.

Security lights are one of the best ways to deter intruders, vandals etc who would steal or damage your property, and also may deter those pesky animals that enter your gardens and tear up your flowerbeds. They are often operated on a motion-sensor so that when something runs in front of the light, it will turn on for a period of time before switching itself off automatically.

The presence of outside lighting can also give you peace of mind when you are away from your house at night and I can even arrange it so that when a security light comes on, a selected inside light comes on as well. This is a great benefit because it “fools “ intruders, and simulates the presence of someone in the house.

Finally, if you have a video surveillance system and add security lights, the features of criminals breaking into your house or vandalising your property when greater compared to most night vision cameras only, and help the police catch them.

If you would like to discuss, outside lights with me, please call me on my contact numbers. Tel 01772 879295, Mob 07704 213224, e-mail jeservices@live.co.uk.

Garden Lighting.

Garden lighting means the difference between you having a garden and enjoying a garden since when you are sitting outside in your garden and it starts to get dusk, so you go indoors, wouldn't it be nice if you could stay outside with out being in total darkness? Well why not invest in some garden lighting to enhance your pleasure.

Mysteries that have confounded the best minds in my house.

I have been reflecting and puzzling about a life recently and cant seem to find an answer to these.

  • Why do women punish men by not talking to them? I think the mother whilst breast-feeding passes the secret onto a daughter. The conversation goes something like this…..“when a man has annoyed you…don’t talk to him. He will then faff about you trying to make it better. Well girls we too have a secret, it does not bother us. In the words on the song “silence is golden”. The quieter the better……be as silent as you like for as long as you like.
Why are my cupboards always empty? This may be because I hate supermarkets, corner shops or garages. There is always somebody standing in front of tin of beans that you want, then when I get to the tills I am always standing in the slowest line, and when I change, that line then becomes the slowest.

  • Why do my children hate me dancing - this is one of the benefits of being a parent…. nothing like embarrassing the kids. At my last family do I had a few jigs with random people, aunties, sisters etc. and I was delighted when I glanced over at my kids and my son was looking stony faced with his jaw dropped and mouth wide open looking as if he was in pain, and my daughter just mouthed “no dad”. Saturday night fever and the moon dance is not dead in my world.

  • Why do women think that they can punish and torture men by not talking? This is one of life’s great mysteries, but I think I have the answer. I believe that the secret is passed from mother to daughter while breast-feeding. The conversation probably goes like this “when he has annoyed you…make him pay with silence, even if you want a bit of fun and keep him on his toes….. Don’t talk to him…he will hate that then faff about you trying to make it better. Well girls we to have a secret too, it does not bother us. In the words on the song “silence IS golden”. The quieter the better, the more often the better, be as silent as you want for as long as you like.

  • Why do women always hog the TV remote? If a mans little finger moves a fraction of a millimetre in the direction of the remote….FLASH….as quick as a mockingbird blinking its snatched up in a hooked claw and taken out of range of the downtrodden man who is mystified and stunned at the prospect of his wife’s hand moving that fast.
Other things I waste far to much time thinking about are;

  • What is so great about sliced bread?
  • What really is the greatest thing since sliced bread?
  • What was the greatest thing before sliced bread, was it the  bread slicer?
  • Why do we leave cars worth thousands of pounds in the drive while we leave useless things and junk in the garage.
  • Why don't marriage licenses expire?
  • Do babies think adults are cute?
  • Why are there no "B" size batteries?
  • Why do women open there mouths when we put on mascara?
Think I will do some internet shopping!

My regular reader will notice I have changed the background to the bolg…I think the technical name is….well actually I think background is the technical name. Hope you like it.

Does anyone know a good chair shop?

How difficult can it be to buy a chair!….answer VERY!

Call me naive (hello naïve) call me stupid, call me stupid and thick but I thought the process of buying a chair would be a simple and painless. NO…NO….NO. after battling my way through the traffic, fighting my way passed fellow shoppers I eventually found my way sweating and panting into a chair shop. After having a good look around placing my big old ass on several of there finest chairs. I eventually found a recliner that was just perfect.

After that process I had two choices, I could either stick the chair under my arm and head for the door trying to dodge the security cameras, or the second choice and the one I opted for, which involved attracting the attention of a attendant, ordering the chair, arranging delivery, then making the required payment….should be simple enough eh. Unfortunately, this is where the process came apart.

Attendant are like the tooth fairy, everyone has heard of them but no one actually find one, anyway, I had to hunt for one like a big game hunter tracking down a wise old an elephant who wasn’t wanting to be shot. Just imagine how “chuffed”  I was when I eventually found one cowering in the corner talking to his attendant mates. He was battered and had one to many shandys last night (don’t mind that we have all been there)  but when I pointed to the chair and told him I want one of those, he tried to sell me a sofa. The conversation went like this.

  • Me - I would like that chair.
  • Garry - (the attendant) good choice I have one if those….yeh right.
  • Me - any discount for cash?
  • Garry - we don’t accept cash.
  • Me - sorry i thought you said “you don’t accept cash”
  • Garry - that’s right we don’t!
  • Me - why?
  • Garry - its policy…would you like the sofa to match the chair?
  • Me - No just the chair…cant believe you don’t accept cash!
  • Garry - we don’t..sorry..the sofa is great, great for lounging on.
  • Me - Don’t want the sofa, just the chair..it’s a recliner I can lounge on that. I have money in my wallet and you wont accept it?
  • Garry - NO. The sofa is £375, if you buy the sofa and chair together we can do it for £320 but don’t tell the manager….that’s a BARGIN!
  • Me -  no its only a barging if you want and need it, it’s a waste of money if you don’t.
  • Garry – if I ask the manger we could probably let it go for £310.
  • Me…don’t bother I only want the chair.
  • Garry….sorry we cant sell that chair without you buying the sofa as well.
If you are still conscious after that, I wont push my luck and tell you how the rest of the conversation went, however, needless to say I lost the will to live and returned home chair-less.

Think I will do some internet shopping!

My regular reader will notice I have changed the background to the bolg…I think the technical name is….well actually I think background is the technical name. Hope you like it.

Will the world end on May 21st…your thoughts?

Judgement day is almost upon us and its 21st of May. Its not something that I have just made up apparently its someone where in the bible, as I am not a scholar of all things biblical I guess you will have to find its yourself. I really really hope the prediction is wrong because factory job booked in of June.

The other prediction I have heard of is that the world will end on 21st December 2012. Wouldn’t you know it just before Christmas, and around the time of the holidays, I will have probably bought most of the pressies by them and endured months of Christmas advertising.

The world ending…eh…just likes busses, you wait a couple of million years for one to come then 2 arrive within a couple of years.

Puppies or Kittens?

Strange thing for an electrician to ask! And my regular reader will think I have finally lost my mind. However, there is method in my madness, or is it madness in my method. But I was working late last night thinking about how I could improve comments readers’ leave. Then the answer came like a lightning bolt from the sky. Puppies and kittens…. everybody loves em. Cute little Labrador puppies and fluffy little kittens what's not to like!
Personally I am a lover of hounds, mans best friend etc etc. dogs can be trained to fetch sticks, roll over, give a paw or sit, where cats can be trained to…eh use a litter tray…and well that’s about it…. i think.
My regular reader will be aware that I can talk pretty much for ever, but I am struggling with this a wee bit, so I am going to leave it there!
As you will sense my knowledge of K9’s and felines is vast so if you have a question please ask it.
Anyway, tell me which you prefer.

Fuse box change.

Footie, fantastic weather and Magners, is there a better way to spend a Thursday Evening?

After a very warm and exhausting day I am now at home relaxing and waiting for the football to start.

This morning I was drilling a couple of large holes in walls for extract fans. This one of these jobs I hate, and would rather have sex with a sweaty horse called Mabel than do and its probably why apprentices were put on this earth.

This afternoon, I was working at Rob Fishers (www.fisherbuildingservices.co.uk) finishing (well almost) his attic conversion. When its finished it will be fabulious.

I have decided to tell you about the method of changing a fuse box to a modern consumers unit. This is an electrical job that should always be left to a competent electrician.

I get asked to price a fuse box to a consumers unit about two times per month, and for someone who is trained it’s relatively straightforward and simple and will take around a day.

The first step is important. It involves testing the house. We need to do this because we cannot reconnect any circuit which are present an immediate danger or potentially dangerous, and there are a great many circuits out there that have either decayed with age, or DIYers have “had a go” and installed additional accessories and completely messed it up. Another function of the test is that if done properly it will highlight problems that will cause unwanted tripping of an RCD (this is a sensitive device that is found in modern consumers units, and switches off the electricity when a fault occurs) If we find any such problems they would need to be rectified before the fuse box is changed.

We also need to consider the

  • Earthing arrangement for the house – we are required to ensure that your house has adequate eathing, this will involve the electrician wanting to see the gas meter and water stop cock. Strange things for an electrician wanting to see I know, but we are required to ensure that these services are earthed with the properly sized earth wire. If its not present than it will need to be installed before the fuse board is changed.
  • Main tails to the fuse box – these are the two grey wires that supply electricity to the fuse box, and if incorrectly sized will need to be changed.  Some of the other issues that need to be considered before.
Assuming that everything is ok to this point, the fuse board can be changed. This is literally a matter of disconnection the old one, then replacing with the new consumers unit. There will almost certainly be some cables that are to sort to be routed into the new positions, these will need to be jointed before terminating into the new locations.

After all that has been done, there are a few more tests required and the house made live again. After completion you should be issued with a certificate or it will be mailed to you along the invoice.

I often get asked over the telephone how much will it cost to replace a consumers unit, where I can give them a ball park figure, it will not include any remedial works, upgrading the earthing etc. the actual cost of replacing a consumers unit only depends where you live in the country, I have seen prices from as little as £275 to £550. But as previously stated this is unlikely to include remedial works.

It is also worth noting, that these works fall under Part P of the building regulations and should only be undertaken by someone who is registered as a Domestic Installer. I have attached a link to the building regulations. (http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/br/BR_PDF_ADP_2006.pdf)

Until next time, thanks for taking the time to read this and don’t forget to let me know what you think, I will be glad to receive comments, good or bad, and if I can help you with a consumers unit change or any other electrical work please drop me a line.

Why don’t you follow me, nothing bad will happen!

Thanks again. Ian

Over the last few days I have rewired a house, which took me a while. in the house fuse box  and consumers unit, which had to be replaced with a replacement fuse box.  There were a few additional sockets, which I had to install too. I had to wire a wiring extension, and install additional down lights and additional lights including additional outside lights.  I needed to wire a AEG cooker; there was also some new outside lights and a mira shower too. I am also an emergency electrician and on call 24hours. Just in case you don’t know I am an electrician in preston, or to put another way I am a preston electrician,  I also in stall lighting preston.

What a weekend! How good was yours?

At last I am back home, with my feet up and enjoying a nice cuppa…for my regular reader they will by familiar with my drinking, but less familiar with drinking a non-alcoholic beverage. I was in Glasgow over the last couple of days with my kids, because they live at the other end of the country I only see them once each month or five weeks, but when I do I love every minute of it. My daughter is massively intelligent and a pleasure to be with, she takes after her mother, where my son is annoying, loud, embarrassing and very funny, he takes after me. Anyway, its my lads 16th birthday next month, so he conned me out of an early birthday present, a blackberry mobile which looks great, but while looking in every phone shop in the known world, I (well actually my lad decided for me) decide that I should be brought into the 21st centaury and put away my old clunkity clunkity thing and up grade too. I am now the proud owner of a fancy android phone, which I cant work, cant seem to get connected to the net, pick up e mails and can barley use to make a call from, but it looks the part. Anyway I think what I need is the use of an adolescent child that can give this simple man some very simple instructions on the use of my fancy phone, either that or if my reader knows where I could hold of book called “mobile phones for dummies” that would do equally as well…. just make sure its lots of pictures.

my two kids Rachael & Andrew (he wont stop talking....takes after his mother)

Anyway, tell me what you have been up to over the bank holiday, I am genuinely interested.

Until next time, thanks for taking the time to read this and don’t forget to let me know what you think, I will be glad to receive comments, good or bad.
